Call for Essays! – European Media Seminar 2018 in Berlin

You are fascinated about European politics? You like analysing, writing and presenting an argument? Take part in our essay competition!

Winners will be invited to attend the European Media Seminar, which will take place from 27 April to 29 April 2018 in Berlin.

The multilingual webzine le taurillon/ the new federalist / / eurobull invites young writers and future journalists to submit texts on European politics, history and culture. We encourage authors aged 18 to 26 to hand in their essays! We are looking for contributions from a) authors who are already writing for our webzine and b) authors who have first experiences in journalistic writing or blogging and who are eager to write regularly for our magazine.

Applicants can choose between the following topics:

  1. European elections 2019: Young voters reclaiming the seats? Young voters are chronically underrepresented in the elections to the European Parliament. Yet they have a natural interest in a successful future of European integration. How can more young voters be mobilised to engage with European politics and make use of their voting right? How can media makers contribute to a more europeanized media environment?
  2. News for Newropeans: Reaching out to readers with migration history. Europe is an ageing continent with a growing proportion of citizens originating from third countries. This results in challenges for journalists and news providers regarding language, reading habits and reader retention. The essay should elaborate on existing challenges, potentials and strategies for European media makers considering the growing number of EU-citizens originating from third countries. The text should be based on thoroughly researched facts and solid argumentation but may include the author’s personal experience or viewpoint.
  3. European history: towards a culture of “anything goes“ in European history and culture of remembrance? Political arguments often derive their legitimation from history. How history is written, taught and exhibited on the other hand is influenced by the political order we live in. For this essay authors are asked to reflect upon the phenomena of „alternative facts“ and „post-truth“ in the context of historical arguments, the pitfalls of historical analogies and the potential of political manipulation.

Texts should be no shorter than 800 words and no longer than 1,500 words, font size 12 with 1.5 spacing. Please export your texts to a single pdf-file. We are not looking for lengthy research reports or university student papers but for poignant essays that are reader-friendly and suitable for publication in an online magazine. We accept essays in English, French and German. Please note that we don’t accept texts that have already be published earlier.
Essay submissions should be made via the following email adress:
The submission deadline is 28 February 2018.
